Blackout curtains are curtains that are used in a room to filter out light and heat from outside. These curtains were originally designed to be used to shade crops that were sensitive to the light. The curtains were used to provide insulation, and to make sure enough heat was kept near the plant. Although blackout curtains were designed for this purpose they found another use during the war. The blackout started two days before the war began. The rules were that everyone needed to cover their windows so that no light showed from outside. This was to make it harder for German bombers to find a target. All street lamps were turned off, and car headlights had to be blacked out, making in extremely difficult to drive at night. Many times these curtains were simply black fabric or dark paper affixed to the window.
