Substance abuse is a major cause of physical and emotional problems for many people. Treatment for substance abuse needs to be extremely individually focused and many factors need to be considered. The plan needs to take into account the type of substance being abused, the economic and social environment of the patient, family history, mental health issues and the general attitudes, physical and emotional needs and the behavioral routines of the patient. Begin by identifying the substance that is being abused and whether there are medications to assist in the withdrawal from the substance, as is the case with opiate addiction, where methadone is used.
