How does a covalent bond form?
Atoms are more “happy” when in an ionic bond than a covalent bond. Ionic bonds are when atoms give or take electrons. For instance, NaCl is an example of an ionic bond. Sodium gives an electron, and Chlorine takes an electron. Both become extremely stable and they are satisfied. In a covalent bond, the atoms share electrons. Take oxygen gas for instance (O2). The two oxygen atoms have a shares electrons, and their bond is a double bond, meaning that 4 electrons are shared. It should look like this O::O The semi colon represents the electrons, and this is an example of a double bond.
