What is a CPU? A central processing unit (CPU) is the brains of the computer. It's the most vital part of the computer because it is responsible for processing data and executing programs. Without a CPU, there is essentially no computer. Why Does the CPU Heat Up? The more processing power the computer uses, the more likely it will overheat. The CPU generates heat from internal electrical energy, heating up when it is more active. How the CPU Fan Works Every computer has a dedicated CPU fan. Its job is to monitor the motherboard, processors and video cards. The fan blows heat away from these components, ensuring that they stay cool and operable. In some computers, there are two fans. One intakes cold air and the other expels hot air.  more
