Coding the Procedures Throughout the day, the medical billing specialist must sort through medical records, either traditional paper records or electronic records, depending on the location. The specialist is looking for the most serious diagnosis that was made as a result of testing. She may have to find the most serious reason for the patient’s care, as well. This is because many insurance companies may deny expensive treatments and tests for common illnesses or conditions which aren’t serious. As such, this job requires a considerable understanding of medical terms and definitions. Filing the Claim Once the specialist has determined the proper codes for the illness, and subsequent tests and treatments, she must transfer that data to the forms she will send to the insurance companies.
