I think it goes by the bouncing or moving of your hip when you take a step. On older ones, you can hear them click every time you take a step. A pedometer only counts steps, not distance, so it doesn’t matter how big your steps are. If you are wondering why it doesn’t count 5 steps when you run because of a large bounce (by your final question), after the initial step, the bouncing is not as rigid. I think it is possible to trick a pedometer if you step very, very lightly.
