How Does Basil Grow?
Growing Basil From Seeds Basil offers fragrant and flavorful leaves that can be used in cooking your favorite pasta dish or as an element in your salads. Growing basil is a straightforward process if you plan to germinate your plants from seeds. Sow your basil seeds sparingly, enough to have 2 to 3 plants in each pot. Make sure your pots have sufficient drainage; basil does not like soil that is too moist. Cover the seeds with about 1/8 inch of compost and gently firm into place. It takes about a week for the basil seeds to germinate. Place the planted seeds on a sunny windowsill, one that gets at least 6 to 8 hours of light each day. Wait until your seedlings have developed 2 pairs of leaves, and then thin out the weaker seedlings, leaving the strong to grow into basil plants. Growing Basil in Potted Plants or Your Garden You can grow basil in pots inside your home year round, and outside on your patio during frost-free seasons. Wait until after any threat of a spring frost has passed
