Clomiphine Citrate (Clomid) is an oral drug used in selected patients to induce ovulation. The medication, administered early in the menstrual cycle, works to supress or mask the natural presence of estrogen. The pituitary gland does not detect the true amount of estrogen present in the body and is tricked into producing more follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones cause a follicle to ripen and be released as an ovum. Of well-screened patients who use Clomid, 70% will ovulate and of those women, 40% will become pregnant.
