How does cryptography relate to math?
Cryptography is heavily based on math. For starters, to encrypt data is to apply a (very complicated) function, which is key-dependent, to the data. Some cryptographic algorithms rely on hard mathematical problems for their strength, like the factoring of *big* numbers (like 1000 digits long); there’s no known easy way or shortcut to factoring such enormous numbers. For a general overview of cryptography, please see the sources below. The last one is fairly advanced, and is indicated for college students.
