He charges a service fee in addition to the cash bail. The service fee could be a fixed amount or a percentage of the bail. Example - I had $100,000 bail and I paid $2,500 down towards a $10,000 fee to my bondsman to post bail and obtain my release. The bondsman has line of credit with courthouses which is covered by insurance. When my case was disposed, the $100,000 moved from the court back to the line of credit - the bondsman made his $10K. Dog has enough assets such that he has similiar arrangements with the courts in Hawaii and may simply charge a fee for higher bonds (called property bonds in MD).  more
