How does Ecotrin® differ from plain (uncoated) or buffered aspirin?
Both plain and buffered forms are formulated to dissolve in the stomach, making the stomach more prone to aspirin-induced damage than it would be with Ecotrin®. The pH or acid content of the stomach is the key to efficacy of the special coating on Ecotrin®. See how Ecotrin® dissolves in the stomach. Safety-coated Ecotrin® resists dissolution in the more acidic stomach (pH 2-4). Instead, the coating dissolves in the more basic environment of the small intestine, thereby releasing aspirin in the small intestine and reducing the risk of stomach upset and bleeding.
