Jay Gatsby was a dreamer, and Fitzgerald also was one- the St. Paul native dreamed of making it big as a screenwriter in Hollywood. But old sport Fitz was disillusioned with the greedy character of society in the urban 1920's. He used Jay Gatsby as a vehicle to show how the American Dream was corrupted by the gluttony and the greed of rich urban professionals. hope this helps. more
