How does John Proctor change throughout “The Crucible”?
When the play opens, John is looking to regain his wife’s trust. At first, Proctor is convinced he should just confess. . However, when the court requires him to sign his name to a confession, he refuses to do it. It’s one thing to speak a lie, and another to legally sign your name to a document that contains a false confession. Proctor’s decision to die for the truth is his moment of rebirth, a moment when he embraces not only his humanness, but also the goodness within himself.
