How does Maslows hierarchy of needs relate to effective counsling?
Maslow’s Heirarchy is very open to interpretation and very speculative (how does survival needs relate to effective counseling? If you don’t have sufficient food, shelter, or clothing, I doubt counseling would be the first thing on your mind. At the top of the heirarchy is Self-Actualization. My question is, if you are self-actualized, why would you need counseling??). You might be better off reading about something like Humanistic Psychology (Carl Rogers) as it would probably relate to counseling issues better than Maslow. Roger’s theory is a clinical one, based on years of experience dealing with his clients. He has this in common with Freud, for example. Also in common with Freud is that his is a particularly rich and mature theory — well thought-out and logically tight, with broad application.
