How does Mpeg compare to VHS, Laser Disc, or DVD?
MPEG is digital, so when using effects such as still-frame or slow-motion the MPEG playback quality is much better than standard VHS. The sound quality from MPEG is cd-quality audio which standard VHS cannot provide. VHS degrades each time it is playedback, while CDs do not degrade with playback. Laser Disc is slightly better in picture quality only, but it is much more expensive, bulky, and not multi-platform compatible like the MPEG titles which can be playedback on PC, MAC, and stand-alone CDI type machines. DVD is just now coming available, and there are few DVD movies currently available. You should realistically keep three things in mind: Price, Quality, and Multi-platform compatibility.
