How does NSI® BioVinca® Vinpocetine work?
Vinpocetine is a chemical substance synthesized from vincamine, a natural constituent found in the leaves of the Vinca minor (lesser periwinkle) plant. Popular in Europe and Japan as a memory-enhancing supplement for the past several decades, vinpocetine has recently become available as a dietary supplement in the U.S. Normal aging may result in reduced blood flow to the brain and a decrease in the metabolic activity of brain cells. Vinpocetine is believed to promote healthy cognitive function by acting as a cerebral vasodilator, meaning it enhances blood flow to the brain. Vinpocetine works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 1 (PDE1), while at the same time reducing intracellular calcium levels. This allows brain blood vessels to relax and increases the amount of blood flowing through them.
