How does one demolish a skyscraper in a densely populated city like New York?

I like this question, because a few months ago a friend of mine worked on a movie called “The Other Guys” that has a scene, shot in Manhattan, where a van is hit by a wrecking ball that is being used to demolish building. A shot of that scene appeared on the web without an explanation that it was a movie shoot, and some people took it to be real… until more knowledgeable people pointed out that wrecking balls and other similar demolition techniques haven’t been used in major cities in years. Even implosion these days is only be used in areas where there’s at least blocks of empty space available.
