How Does Prozac Work?
Prozac works in the nerves in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical (neurotransmitter) that sends messages between the nerves in the brain. Nerve cells release serotonin, which improves mood. When the nerves take the serotonin back in, it can no longer improve mood. It is thought that depression is caused when there is less serotonin in the brain. Prozac stops the nerves from taking the serotonin back in, which allows it to improve mood, which helps with depression.
