A significant number of buildings in DC that belong to the federal government are based on neoclassical architectural designs, which in turn is based off Greco-Roman classical architecture. The reason for such a large number of buildings based off that style could be because of a need to associate the US government with the earliest forms of republicanism. Some that come to mind are Union Station, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Capital building, some of the buildings on the Smithsonian Institute, the Department of Treasury building, and the Supreme Court building.
