How does Severn Power fit into the energy mix in South Wales?
There is a shortage of power generation in South Wales, which is a net importer of electricity. Severn Power will create more than 650 high-value jobs in the region, improve security of supply and support the development of new industry. The plant’s impact on local transmission charges and national power prices is expected to encourage new businesses to locate in the area, and prompt existing, notably energy-intensive industries, to invest in expansion or new plant, which would further increase the economic benefits to the region. A CCGT means that this will be achievable in a timely fashion compared to longer commissioning time for nuclear plant and the need to test renewable energy sources further for production on this scale.
