How does South Lakes help rising 9th-graders assimilate into the school?

Every incoming Freshman student is assigned a Junior or Senior Taking Flight mentor who meets with him or her throughout the year to discuss high school transition issues and help him or her succeed at South Lakes High School. Most mentors attend the New Student Orientation at the end of August. New 9th grade students are assigned their actual mentors during the first week of school. Junior and Senior mentors are recommended to the Taking Flight program by teachers, submit an application, and are chosen by a committee of students and staff. For the 08-09 school year, 110 mentors were chosen from almost 400 applicants.
