How does the cost of a rack and pinion system compare to that of a cable driven elevator system?
For new construction a similar capacity Rack and Pinion system will be priced comparable to a cable system. However, they cannot be fairly compared as Rack and Pinion is Code compliant and the wireless controlled cable systems are not. Also, cable systems cannot legally haul freight, require more maintenance dollars, and do not have the Code required secure communications. It is common to see quotations from cable system suppliers with a notation stating that they do not meet the Code. So, initial cost is similar, but utility value is greater and cost of ownership is lower with the Rack and Pinion systems.
