The U.S. Energy Information Administration released the following figures for 2008, the last year for which data is available. The costs of various forms of fossil fuels per million British Thermal Units (BTU), is as follows: Coal – $2.04/million BTU Petroleum liquids – $16.67/million BTU Natural gas – $9.58/million BTU Clearly, coal is the most cost effective form of heat energy in the fossil fuel sector.
