How does the GRE exam gauge my knowledge of vocabulary?

0

Of the 30 questions on the Verbal section of the GRE exam, 16 test your vocabulary head-on. Among other question types, the Verbal section includes: • 9 Analogy questions, where your job is to determine the relationship between words in pairs, and • 7 Antonym questions, where your task is to choose which word among five choices is most contrary, or opposite, in meaning to a particular word. Unless you know the meaning of the various words incorporated into an Analogy and Antonym question, you can’t provide a reasoned response to the question; in other words, you have no choice but to take a guess as to the correct answer. NOTE: The GRE Verbal section’s Sentence Completion and Text Completion questions also gauge your vocabulary level, but not as directly as Analogy and Antonym questions.
