How does the MS Exchange email server function?
The Internet uses what are called “SMTP gateways” to exchange mail between servers. SMTP capability is added to Exchange by installing and starting the WinNT Internet Messaging Service option of Exchange. The IMS and SMTP connector is standard on Exchange V5.5 servers of all types. Microsoft offers a special version of Exchange bundled with their Small Business Server package. In the SBS marketing and documentation, Microsoft suggests several options for connecting the bundled version of MS Exchange to the internet. One heavily-promoted feature is connecting the Exchange server to the Internet via an inexpensive on-demand dialup ISP account.
