How does the Online class work?

At home or work or in the Math tutoring lab, you will learn the course material by reading the textbook and doing online interactive exercises. You will do your homework on paper (just like you do in a regular class). Online, you need to take the online tests and quizzes. You also need to interact with your classmates by posting your opinion, answer your classmates’ questions in the Discussion Forum and E-mail. You will have one or more on-campus midterm(s) and a final examination. If you have a question, you can post your questions in the Discussion Forum, contact me by E-mail, or phone. You can also go to Math Tutoring Lab or make an appointment to meet me in person. I am usually available during my office hours listed in the Syllabus.

Anything that you would normally do in a classroom (not a lab setting) is done online. Lectures are a narrated powerpoint, so there is voice and additional information given during the lecture, which you can view as often as you like. Quizzes and tests are given online. Discussions are held via a “discussion board”. Essentially like communicating with someone via written notes or a message board. Various assignments are also either completed online or submitted via a web link.

Lectures are prerecorded and can be viewed on www.YourOtherTeacher.com (there is a cost to watch these videos). There are weekly assignments (quizzes) and they are uploaded using Blackboard. Tests can be taken at Cuesta or at a proctoring center near where you live. Please see the below for more detailed information.

Using a web browser, you will log on to the internet and navigate to the UMASS Online site. You will log in to the site using a user name and password provided to you at the start of class. Each week, in the assigned folders online, the instructor will post a new lecture (the instructor will inform you at the beginning of the course what day of the week this will take place). The instructor may note additional readings or websites that are part of homework. An assignment incorporating aspects discussed in the lecture will be posted at this time as well. Students will have the next week to complete the assignment and post it in the section of the course allocated for assignment postings. Additionally, students are required to visit and participate in the threaded discussion section of the course, where students can communicate to each other and to the instructor to discuss topics relevant to the lecture, or their homework. As assignments are completed, the instructor will review and pro
