How does the project link with the plans to electrify the Great Western Main Line from Paddington to Swansea?
The project is entirely separate to the electrification project. The Portishead branch line would operate as a conventional diesel trail line as the additional costs of electrification at this stage would far outstrip the additional benefits accrued. However, the project will be future proofed so that the branch line could be electrified at some point in the future.
