How does the titanium dioxide coating on the activated carbon filter work with the UV light to further purify the air?
The activated carbon filter contains charcoal granules which absorb gases, vapours and odours. One side of filter facing the UV tube is coated with titanium dioxide. Titanium Dioxide also referred to by its chemical formula TiO², it is harmless, opaque and approved for use in many products by the FDA. When the UV light rays hit the titanium dioxide surface, a chemical reaction occurs which produces what are known as hydroxyl radicals. These radicals quickly react with VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), micro bacteria and viruses to convert them into non-organic matter in the form of water and CO², thus rendering them harmless. Other commercial and product uses for titanium dioxide include but are not limited to, anti-fogging and pollution resistant surface coatings, pigmentation for toothpaste and white paint, sun block agent and water purification.
