GP training is the same as all other specialist training until ST1 (this is what comes after F2). In ST1, you will be expected to work mostly at the GP, but you will also have to work in the hospital. In med school you will be expected to do surgery rotations in yr3 and yr5. You will be expected to attend clinics/ wardrounds/surgery, but you mostly stand around and watch/ hold Instruments/get asked all sorts of weird and wonderful questions. It is actually quite rare that they will ask you to suture a patient – In the 6 yrs I spent in med school – I was never asked to do this – although I did know some students who did. When you do your final exams you are expected to perform surgical skills such as breast exam, peripheral vascular system exam, catheterisation. You will be expected to have a wide (but quite superficial knowledge) of the common surgical conditions.
