For both PTAC and fan coil units, the consumption savings (KWH) available through reduction of in-room costs are greater through this system than any other form of improvement such as lighting, insulation, and new windows, etc. The return of the capital required for smart thermostats and in-room control is in the 40% plus range at 2004 electricity rates. For rooms on a central boiler system an analysis is required to see if the savings at the room level transfer to the central system. Quite often there are not enough controls on the central boiler to provide any significant savings at the room level, especially on some of the older less sophisticated systems.
