How does Ultram (Tramadol) work?
Although it is not known exactly how Ultram (Tramadol) works to help relieve pain, laboratory studies suggest at least two methods may explain its effects: First, Tramadol and its metabolite (compound it is transformed into) bind directly to opioid receptors in the nervous system acting directly on the brain and spinal cord reducing the amount of pain. Second, it influences the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, which reduces the size of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another.
