How does Unicode Hex input work?

Unicode Hex is an all-purpose input supplied by Apple in OS 10.2 and 10.3 to allow the entry of any unicode code point in the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP), that is, the code points that are four digits long in hexadecimal notation. When you activate this keyboard (in System Preferences: International: Input Menu), you can type basic Roman characters normally from your keyboard, or you can type any Unicode character available in any font in your system by holding down the option key while typing the four digits of the hexadecimal code. For example, if you hold option down while typing 039e, the character capital xi will appear (from the Lucida Grande font, if the character is not present in the font you currently have selected). This input cannot be used for code points in the Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP), which have five digits in hexadecimal notation. Return to top of FAQ.
