How dose a sea-floor spreading supports Wegener’s continental drift theory?
Seafloor spreading DOES NOT support Wegener’s Theory of Continental Drift, it supports the Theory of Plate Tectonics. Wegener was ridiculed by his colleagues because his theory didn’t have a mechanism. In all fairness to Wegener, the floor of the ocean was unknown at his time, as was the understanding of a convecting mantle Wegener supported his theory by showing that the shapes of continents on the opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean matched; and that rock formations matched when these continents were placed side by side. His arguments didn’t convince many of his contemporaries. It wasn’t until World War II and the introduction of sonar that a view of the ocean floor emerged. Modern geophysics has lead to an understanding of the interior of the Earth and its convecting mantle, thus providing a mechanism for Plate Tectonics Theory.
