How easy is it to paint over wood paneling?

You should be able to paint over your paneling but I would suggest sanding it lightly first if the surface is smooth, then prime and paint. You could also sheetrock right over the paneling with 1/4″ or 3/8″ sheetrock tape and prime and paint but you will need to remove and reinstall the trim and possibly install extension jams/shim material around windows and doors. now if the home is older and electrical or insulation etc. may need updating then I would take the paneling down do the updates and then sheetrock, tape, prime and paint. I honestly think painting paneling looks kinda….well bad but that’s just my opinion. Also if you sheet rock you will need to tape the walls to the ceiling or install some type of trim which both can be difficult if the ceiling is textured, and if it is textured and you tape them together you will need to re-spray the ceiling which is easier/cheaper than most people think.
