Actually, a fast race horse can run a mile in about 1 minute and 40 seconds, more or less. Secretariat, who set records for all 3 races in his 1973 Triple Crown win, averaged 24 seconds per quarter mile in both the Kentucky Derby (1-1/4 miles in 1:59 2/5) and in the Belmont (1-1/2 miles in 2:24 flat). That would mean one mile was run in 1:36. At that rate, the horse would be running 37.5 miles per hour!
