How has Philip Morris USAs Youth Smoking Prevention department used TABS data?
For the past nine years, TABS has served as a complement to the other available national studies and has been a valuable source of information and an important tool in continuing Philip Morris USA’s commitment to help reduce underage tobacco use. TABS has helped us understand why some youth may be more susceptible to smoking than others, and has been a resource to help guide us in developing messages and programs to discourage and prevent youth smoking. For example, TABS data have consistently indicated that youth who have a positive relationship with their parents may be less likely to smoke. In addition, youth non-smokers report more frequent and proactive conversations with their parents about not smoking as compared to adolescent smokers. This data, along with other research, supports one of our YSP communications strategies: to encourage parents to have frequent conversations with their children and to talk to them about not smoking.
