How important are college sex columnists to maintaining freedom of speech on college campuses and in America?
DR: As a college media scholar, I am a strong advocate of both freedom of expression and freedom of discretion for student journalists. Student sex columns and magazines are a perfect example of what can be produced when both of those freedoms are valued. Regardless of what detractors say, students are writing about and reporting upon sex responsibly in the columns and magazines. The pieces and publications are hardly ever overly vulgar. They are not being published for shock value. And they are not a slippery slope toward an anarchic, X-rated college press. They prove that administrative interference with student expression is not just ethically wrong, but unneeded. Student journalists are the best judges of what they want to say and how they want to say it.
