How important is forensic accounting in the war on terror?
In practice I’m not sure how extensively it’s really being used. Shortly after 9/11, someone in the government made the statement that we were going to go after the terrorists on all fronts, including cutting off their financial supplies. We immediately froze a bunch of bank accounts and started looking into companies that were doing funky things. It seemed really smart and it impressed me that people in the government were really thinking about how to put a stop to terrorist activity on a very practical level. But I’ve heard very little about it since then. And I keep hearing about that “conspiracy theory” where some groups or entities shorted a bunch of airline stocks just before 9/11. And I have yet to hear anything about us tying that together with Al Qaeda. Maybe it has been connected, I just haven’t heard about it.
