How Important Was Winston Churchill in the Victory of World War Two?

Some surprising answers so far. I have read extensively about WW2. Winston Churchill was enormously important. This is quite a deep subject, but in any leader – you need leadership skills – Churchill had those – and in fairness so did Adolf Hitler. Churchill also had values – values that people could relate to – at that point in time. Churchill wasn’t perfect – far from it – but at that moment – at that time he was the man. He instilled a belief, a faith and a confidence in the British. His basic message was – we will fight to the death, to every last man. What is even more amazing is that he didn’t belive we were going to win. In 1940 he privately thought it was a matter of time before Britain was overun. ( I say privately, he shared these thoughts with his military adviser – their black humour was frequent as they joked if they’d even be alive themselves in a months time) The worst period for Britain was 1940 and 41 where we were essentially alone at resisting the Germans and co.
