How is bamboo yarn made?
Bamboo yarn is soft, breathable and antibacterial made from a sustainable, organic resource. Bamboo can be processed into yarn mechanically or chemically. The majority of commercially available bamboo yarn is processed chemically.SteepingBamboo yarn is made from cellulose, which is found in the leaves and walls of the bamboo plant. The leaves and woody shoots are crushed and then soaked for one to three hours in caustic soda (sodium hydroxide).Pressing and ShreddingThe bamboo cellulose is pressed to remove excess solution and then shredded into “crumbs.” It dries for 24 hours.ViscoseThe cellulose dissolves into a liquid, called viscose, through treatment with carbon disulphide and sodium hydroxide.SpinningThe viscose is filtered and then forced through the fine holes of a spinneret into a sulfuric acid bath.
