How is BAT Australia addressing the issue of cigarette butt litter?
We recognise the problems associated with cigarette butt litter and in 2002 we made the decision to consolidate our efforts and resources; facilitating the development of the Butt Littering Trust to address the growing issue of butt littering in Australia. The Trust is wholly funded by BAT Australia but operates independently, governed by a Board of Trustees. We have committed $4.4 million to the Butt Littering Trust to run anti butt littering projects over six years to 2009. From 2003 – 2007, the Trust has carried out 60 projects across Australia including the ‘Butt Free City’ campaign in major cities across Australia. Here are some of the great results the trust has achieved in this period: • 26.7% overall average reduction in butt littering across all project areas • 78,506 people have been exposed to face-to-face education concerning the environmental effects of butt littering • 25,430 smokers have pledged to ‘butt it then bin it’ • The Trust provided funding support of $1,185,385,
