How is Chinas One Child Policy enforced?
Forced abortion. There was a young Chinese couple in America some years ago – they were seeking asylum, because they already had one child (a girl) and she was six months pregnant with number two (a boy). China was demanding their return so they could get an abortion. I never heard what happened to them. Because of the one child rule, abortions are common in China. Boys are more desired, so when the first pregnancy was going to be a girl, many people aborted and tried for a boy. I saw some statistics where out of 6000 abortions, only one was male. 30 years later, they are having a problem – there are about 125-150 men for every 100 women, so many men will end up single as there aren’t enough women to go around. Their population is also aging at an alarming rate – there are just not enough young people to support the systems in place for elder care.
