How is Humboldt County doing?
From 2001-2008, FIRST 5 HUMBOLDT has provided support to playgroups in 18 communities. Because FIRST 5 HUMBOLDT feels playgroups are an excellent way to support young children and families, it expects to support more groups in the years to come. First 5 Humboldt project: The McKinleyville Playgroup is a new playgroup that started in September 2007. It started because a group of twelve parents wanted to have a playgroup in McKinleyville based on the model of the Arcata Play Center. They came to FIRST 5 HUMBOLDT wondering if there was funding to support the playgroup. FIRST 5 then approached McKinleyville Parks and Recreation and encouraged them to work with the parents to develop the playgroup. Parks and Recreation was receptive to this idea, joined with the parents to develop a proposal, and FIRST 5 approved funding for the playgroup. Since that time the playgroup has grown from one to two days a week, and provides a safe, fun place for parents with young children to gather. New parent
