How is radiation given?
There are several ways to administer radiation: • External beam treatment is delivered with a linear accelerator. • “Brachytherapy” Refers to radiation sources applied within the body . • Intracavitary treatment is used for gynecologic cancers- radioactive material is placed temporarily inside instruments inserted into the patient’s vagina and uterus. • Interstitial treatment is used for prostate cancer- radioactive pellets or seeds (which look like a metallic grain of rice) are permanently implanted within the prostate gland.
