How is service learning structured at Umbra?
Service Learning at the Umbra Institute is organized in three main models of community engagement. The pilot program consists of a practicum course, the Perugia Practicum, a practical, hands-on course designed to facilitate student interaction with the community by providing foundation in the principles of service learning and opportunities to apply these principles through direct engagement with the community. The objectives of this course are to enhance language acquisition, academic learning, reciprocity and meaningful enjoyment through participation in cooperative projects with local organizations. The students explore how a region’s geography and history shape its contemporary identity and develop a project that synthesizes material studied over the term. This semester students work with the office of international relations at the Comune di Perugia, the Uguccione Ranieri di Sorbello Foundation, a family-owned library-museum in the historic center of Perugia and the Perugina choco
