How is the landform called a mesa formed?
Mesas, like buttes and plateaus, are first formed by the uplifting of hardened layers of lava which the sides are eroded over time by wind and water. The difference between mesa, buttes and plateaus are the size of the flat cap on top. Plateaus are wider than mesas and mesas are wider than buttes.
