How is the new waste system more effective and environmentally friendly?

All of the waste from the bins will go to an Alternative Waste Technology (AWT) facility in Narellan that separates waste by hand and with machines. Once the different kinds of waste are separated, recyclables will go to recycle centres; organic waste will go to compost, etc. This system can divert at least 70% of waste from landfill with the remaining 30% of waste used for the production of energy from bio-mass (where plant materials and animal waste is used as fuel). One reason this is more effective is because of contamination. The AWT facility both sorts and cleans waste so that contaminants, like food in plastic containers, don’t interfere with the recycling process. As a result, more recyclables can be recycled!
