I must begin by stating that the way in which a prime minister is chosen in Britain is significantly different than how we chose a president in the United States. Now then… The President of the United States is elected by the electoral college. The adult citizens of the U.S. vote, and electoral college delegates are divided up accordingly. Those delegates then directly vote for President. In Great Britain, the Prime Minister is the majority leader in Parliament. In this way, the prime minister post is an over-glorified version of the U.S. speaker of the house. (NOTE: this is only for comparison, not for bashing on the prime minister or his position.) (The U.S. Speaker of the House is the Majority leader of the members of the House.) The people, therefore, essentially directly elect this man to his position, but only partially.
