How long can a police clearance be valid for before another one must be obtained for the application process?

Kindly note that I have just been in contact with Mr. Andrew Grech from the Inland Revenue Department and he informed us that for the purpose of the Permanent Residence applications, the Police Conduct Certificate should not be older than 6 months. However, may I please point out that some Police Conduct Certificates do have an expiry date stated on them which might be only 1 month for example.
