when you park the car the battery starts to run down. Slow or fast depending on the load when everything is off. There will still be some load due to the car clock and computer and maybe the radio. Best to unhook the ground strap to the battery to ensure there is no load on it, Running the engine every week is a good idea, but it has to be for at least 15 minutes! In the first 10 minutes or so the engine is cold and building up moisture in the oil and exhaust system. You need a god 15 minutes to get ahead of the moisture buildup. Driving it around is even better, that will warm up the engine faster and scrub the brake rotors clean. Don't forget to run the AC,k it needs running too to keep the seals lubed.  more

It will make it hard to convince yourself to run the car every now and then. If the battery is over 4 years old, replace it. If the alternator is not working, change it. If you just don't drive often enough to charge the battery and can get along without a car for a while, you should consider getting it running and sell. Sitting on the street, you need more than a few minutes of idling to warm the engine up enough to dry the car out and avoid problems. I would run it until the engine gets to operating temperature, then another 20 minutes at least every 3 weeks. Better to sell and buy later if the car ends up having more serious problems.  more
